Back to School: Finding Free Music

By: Ted Menadier

Finding free music on the Internet can be easy, but finding the music you want can be difficult. For students, the music crackdown in recent years has been especially hard with colleges under pressure from the recording industry to curtail illegal music downloads. Students and music fans alike now have to turn elsewhere to find free music on the Internet.

There are a number of sources that students can use to find free legal music on the Internet such as iTunes, Internet radio, and musician/band homepages. There are also directories such as Links to Tens of Thousand of Legal Music Downloads, which list resources to find free music of all types.

Traditionally iTunes is a pay service, but there are a number of giveaways and other resources that can be used to obtain free downloads. One such resource for free iTunes downloads is Get Free iTunes Store Downloads, which updates every week and provides links to free iTunes downloads.

Internet radio is an immense resource for free music. It is streamed instead of downloaded music like an MP3 file, therefore it is not as portable, but there is an internet radio station out there to suit everyone’s tastes. Pandora.com is an example of a versatile and customizable internet radio station that lets users create up to 100 customizable stations.

Bands and musicians homepages are also a good resources for free downloads. The bands and musicians that provide free downloads are generally lesser known and are providing free downloads to promote themselves and their music.

Keeping up with music news can help in the search for new bands and music to seek out. Recently a new online music community started called Grooveshark that provides music information of all kinds including an immensely informative blog.

There are many more resources for free music on the internet that we haven’t mentioned and new ones are popping up all the time. If you have any sites or resources for free music you like, please feel free to share them by leaving a comment.
