In an article by the RealEstateJournal.com author Ruth Mantell gives a list of 6 great ways to take your apartment from bland to shazam. Following a few of these tips will make the place look more charming and it won’t break the budget.

Here’s a summary of the 6 low cost touch ups:

1. Painting
The number one rule to remember when painting is to use colors that will be easy to paint over and won’t require multiple coats, which will cost you in the future. Try using whites and neutral tones, but remember to ask your landlord for the go ahead before you start throwing on that wet paint.

2. Decals
A great way to get around painting if your landlord wont allow it is wall decals. Companies such as whatisblik.com and modernwallgraphics.com provide an assortment of different shapes sizes and colors. These will definitely allow you your artistic freedom ready to bust out at any moment, or at least make your walls less boring.

3. Rugs
Simple, quick, and easy to change, is why rugs ended up on the list. Expressing yourself through different patterns and fabric types can really bring out the “you” in your apartment.

4. Plants
Not really much to say about plants, but they can really bring the place to life. Unless you opt for the easy to keep alive plants (the fake ones).

5. Hangings
As with the decals this is another way to express yourself and give those boring walls an upgrade. From paintings to posters you find at the thrift store, anything will work.

6. Lights
Last but not least are lights. Lamps come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes along with the multitude of different colored lights to change the mood and setting of a room.

What other cost conscious apartment touch ups have you used in the past?
