Mobile Technology for the Blind

By: Stephen Joos

The future of technology can look pretty bleak at times (see Hot Dog Microwave), but there are some great feats being accomplished solving many issues that we face. Take a new cell phone developed by former teacher at a school for the blind and a professor from Tsukuba University of Technology. The cell phone assists people with sight and hearing difficulties by allowing them to communicate through vibrations. After entering a message on the braile keypad, the phone sends out vibrations at a specific rate, representing Braille symbols to create a message. The founders hope for a broad adoption of this technology, as messages can be easily broadcasted out to the blind. This seems like a great idea, as municipalities are looking to make intersections safer. A message (delivered through Bluetooth) alerting someone when it is safe to cross, seems to be one avenue.
