There are a multitude of different phones and carriers to pick from in today’s mobile world. Cutting through the clutter is Consumers Reports annual best cell phone report, breaking it down by phone, smartphone, and carrier. Here’s a brief list of those that topped the charts in each category.

 

Top Phones in 2007:

1. T-Mobile’s Motorola V195

2. At&T’s Samsung Sync SGH-A707

3. AT&T’s Sony Ericsson W810i

 

 

 

Top Smartphone in 2007:

1. Apple iPhone (surprised?)

2. Palm Treo 755p

3. Samsung BlackJack

 

 

 

 

Top Carriers in 2007:

(based on call quality, dropped calls, and availability of service in 20 major cities)

1. Verizon Wireless

2. T-Mobile

3. Alltel

4. AT&T

5. Sprint

 

There you have it the best of the best in 2007. It’s really interesting how AT&T’s phones were rated at the top of the pile while their service was fourth in the best carrier category. Consumer Reports bases their report off 40 different phones so not every phone on the market was considered and newer ones released late in 2007 might not have made it on the list.

 

While rating systems are good for gauging different aspects of phones, in the end it’s the consumer that decides the “best” phone. In 2007, Motorola topped the list of most purchased phone with the Motorola RAZR V3, followed by Motorola RAZR V3m (V3m has a music player and runs on Verizon Wireless) neither of which made the top five in Consumer Reports testing. The LG VX8300 and the Apple iPhone followed close behind Motorola as the most purchased phones.

 

In 2007, Apple helped change the cell phone market by introducing its iPhone, and now in 2008 Google looks to make some waves of its own by developing an open source operating system for cell phones (Android). It’s going to be another interesting and competitive year in the cell phone market, we’ll see who tops the list in ’08.
